Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters. IOLS also provides great training for Webelos Leaders and Crew Advisors.

They say there is no Scouting withouth the Outing! This course will provide you with the foundational skills to understand the outdoor experience from the scout's perspective and simultaneously provide you with some new knowledge that will help you be a great adult leader. Topics of discussion will range from our role as adults in the development of the outdoor plan to how we support the youth in gear preparation and management to understanding our role in protecting nature for generations to come. We will cover topics such as map/compass, outdoor cooking, knots, first aid for camping trips, wildlife family fun, campfire skills and fun, and we will have a full-on gear rodeo! We will also learn a few fun games and share some scouting fun around our evening campfire!

This course is a requirement for becoming a fully trained leader, but more than that, it is an opportunity to make new friends and develop connections in the Scouting community. Past attendees cite that they stay in touch with their IOLS colleagues and share ideas for outdoor activities, skill development, and more. Most importantly, attendees find that this course sets the foundation for their ability to effectively lead youth in the outdoors... by reminding them that Scouting is a youth led program and that our role as adults is to undertand the experience through their eyes and support them along the way.

There is a pre-meeting requirement to review details for the weekend, establish patrols, conduct meal planning, and undertake gear assignments within each patrol. That meeting will be held the week prior to the event, likely on September 28. Exact time and location will be communicated to the group of attendees in a separate message.
